Legal issues

Star Wars copyright:
In 2002 Ainsworth was making storm trooper helmets and sold 19 of them. Lucas films did not like that so what he did was try and sue him for $20m (£12m). But it didn’t because they didn’t have an implied contract to Ainsworth so it failed and Ainsworth won the court case.

Intellectual property laws:Most business relay on bright ideas weather it’s a new product new brand or new design. How can you protect your ideas from others that’s where IP would work that is split in 4 different areas for example copyrights, trademarks, design rights and patents.Trademarks: used by business to protect their brands.  Register a trademark all around the world. Can apply it to a name a logo or both.  Only needs renewing every ten years.Copyright: this would be automatically documents, maps, images and websites. If you pay someone else for it then it’s there copy right unless you make a contract with the. Will last 70 years after your death.Design rights: covers the uk and abroad and doesn’t have to be expensive furnisher clothes so make sure no one copyrights it. Unregistered designed rights.Patents: new project new process or new produce you need to think about patents. Lasts up to 20 years. Can be complicated and expensive. It would be a good invest in the business seeking for help for proper professional advice.

Freedom of information act:Read and summarise article.

Data protection act:This is a UK law that mandates them to all business in the UK. Each week 4000 information is stored about you online. Customer data is the life of blood every business on the planet. The DPA sates that it needs to be collected fairly and securely. The 8 Principles:1.       Requires the data subjects consent

5.      Should only be kept for as long its needed
6.      Should be made available to the data subject

Copyright designs and patents act 1988Content can be shaped and contrasted in lots of different ways and meanings. As consumers we are exposed to lots of different things for example music, film, YouTube. Need to watch media legally as it’s ethically and morally correct. Years ago only worked with publishing and movies. So you need to try and not use illegal sites.
Libel: If something that is not true and it can be proven then that is liability so the person who was lied about would be sued. So always keep the truth in the papers. If they want to put something up on the newspaper and they don’t know if it can be put on it then they give it to a lawyer. It can be an expensive and time consuming thing to do. This is when you write about derationing someone.SlanderThis also connects to Libel, both of them together are called defamation. Information that was a complete lie about something and then it goes off into more global things making it bigger.  So slander is a spoken/ verbal way of libel.
Human rights act 2014Can’t write down something that would treat someone unfairly. For example targeting people for who they are. They are allow to have freedom of speech for example in movies and TV shows they can have shown like man in the high castle. As well as keeping journalists sources kept secret.
